WESTALL/GLOVER FAMILY BLOG: February 2009

Here is my Tiffen Collection and the information I have collected so far. As you can see the change of name from Tiffin to Tiffen seems to occur quite regularly. My mother was also registered under Tiffen. It does get confusing and is a point I have tried to make sense of unsuccessfully. Maybe those of you who are related to the Tiffen, Tiffin family could shed some light on the matter for me. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to post.

Thomas Tiffin born 1779, married Elizabeth Nicholson in 1804 at Wigton Parish Church Cumbria. Thomas and Elizabeth are my Great,Great,Great,Great Grandparents.

Joseph Robinson Tiffin married Mary Davidson born in 1809 in Penrith, on the 12th November 1831. My Great,Great,Great Grandparents.

George Tiffin my Great, Great Grandfather was married to Jane Tiffin nee Hutton and they had just one child registered at birth as George Davidson Tiffen (different spelling I have the birth certificate to confirm this) This is an intresting twist as it appears that George died either when Jane was pregnant or just after George D was born. It states on the birth certifacate for George D that his father is deceased.
It seems from the census records that Jane then marries a gentleman named Richard Graham, who then takes George D on as his own.

George Davidson Tiffen marries Frances Waite in Maryport in 1891, these are my Great Grandparents I have their Marriage Certificate and here is another name switch George D appears as Tiffin again.

All the children of George and Frances are registered as Tiffen name switch again. They are as follows:

George William Rowland Tiffen b 1892 in Maryport My Grandfather
Richard Graham Tiffen b 1893 Maryport no doubt named after Richard Graham
John Waite Tiffen b. 1894 Newcastle
Florence May Tiffen b. 1897 Newcastle

Edith Maude Tiffen b. 1905 Newcastle

There is a least one more child to add to this list that is Jennifer Tiffen, but I cannot find the birth record for Jenny. I have a feeling she may be the youngest and as you can see from the photographs that follow, I think she was the closest to my own family I remember her very well.

George William Rowland Tiffen married my Grandmother Mona Procter in Burnley Lancs in early 1925.

My mother Audrey Frances Tiffen was born on the 27th December 1925 in Burnley (note my mother is named after Frances Waite) .

My grandfather died in 1936 my mother was an only child.

My mother married my Father, Joseph Francis Glover and I am their only child, I was born on the 5th April 1960 in Blackpool Lancs.

My mother died in the June of 1986 from Cancer and my father died in September 1993 my grandmother Mona died just six weeks before my father also in 1993, the years between my mother dying and my Grandmother and Father dying were very difficult as neither of them could get over the death of my mother at the age of just 60.

I am married to Michael Westall born in Liverpool Merseyside and we have just one son Robert Jan he was born in 1990 in Bolton Lancs. We moved to New Zealand in 1996, we lived in Perth Australia between 2002 and 2004 but moved back to New Zealand. We live in Titirangi which is situated in the Waitakere Ranges just outside Auckland.
