THE GLOVER FAMILY

I am Tracy Westall nee Glover born 5th April 1960 in Blackpool. I am the daughter of Joseph Francis Glover and Audrey Frances Glover nee Tiffen. I live in Auckland New Zealand with my husband Mike and my son Robert.

This part of my blog is about the Glover/Moss side of my family. Please click the words older posts at the bottom of the page to continue viewing.

Joseph Francis Glover born on the 20th December 1922 in Hazel Grove Cheshire was the 4th child out of 5 they include Kenneth,Elsie,Mary & Norman. They are the children of William Arthur Glover and Lillie Glover nee Moss.

Lillie and Arthur were married on the 25th October 1913 at the Parish Church of Norbury.

What follows is all the information I have on the Glover and Moss families. I have carried out extensive research and am confident that my information is accurate I do have copies of many of the original documents I have used in my search. If however you feel that I am inaccurate or would like to add something please do not hesitate to contact me at tracywestall@xtra.co.nz .

I will start with the Glover’s. William Arthur Glover was born on the 13th March 1884 in Crewe he was the eldest of 2 children of Fredrick Glover and Elizabeth Glover nee Hesketh. Fredrick & Elizabeth were married on the 29th December 1882 at St Johns Parish Church Manchester. William Arthur had one sister Ada, she was born on the 26th August 1885 in Willaston Cheshire.

William Arthur (known as Arthur) and Ada’s father, was Fredrick Glover born around 1862 in Willaston Cheshire. Fredrick’s father was Arthur Glover and his mother was named Elizabeth I do not have Elizabeth’s maiden name at this stage, what I do have is the census records for 1871 & 1881 which show that in 1871 the family lived at Willaston Terrace Willaston, Fredrick was 9, and in 1881 they lived at 3 Nantwhich View Willaston, Fredrick was 19 and his occupation is recorded as Groom. I also have the death certificate for Elizabeth Glover she died on the 26th march 1886 aged 64 of Apoplexy. Arthur was already dead as she is recorded as a widow. Had Arthur been alive he would have been 81 as he was approximately 16 years older than Elizabeth.

That’s what I know about Fredrick, what I know about Elizabeth Glover nee Hesketh William Arthur’s mother is a little more comprehensive.

Elizabeth’s born around 1862 parents were William and Emma Hesketh.
In 1871 William and Emma were living at 190 Hospital St Nantwhich, William’s occupation is recorded as a Cordwainer (a person who makes shoes) a number of Cordwainers lived on this road. Elizabeth does not appear on this census maybe she was staying somewhere else on that night. On the 1881 census there is an interesting change of address and occupation, all the family including Elizabeth Jnr are residing at the Public House Cheshire Cheese Willaston, were William is now recorded as Shoemaker and Innkeeper. Elizabeth is now 19 and her occupation is Tailoress.
As we know she marries in 1882 and William Arthur and Ada are born. Unfortunately the story seems to take a turn for the worst here, Elizabeth dies in 1889 at the age of 27 of lung disease, I don’t know what happens to Fredrick but both William Arthur 7 yrs and Ada 5 yrs are living with their grandparents William and Emma on the 1891 census, they are still at the Cheshire Cheese were William is recorded as the publican. I have tried to find out some information about the Cheshire Cheese to no avail there are several Cheshire Cheese Pubs around that area and I can not pin down the right one if indeed it is still standing. After 1891 things seem to go from bad to worse for William Arthur and Ada as they spend sometime in The Barony Orphanage Workhouse but by 1901 they both have jobs and addresses. I do know that Ada marries and goes to live in London and of course William Arthur marries Lillie Moss in 1913. That’s all on the Glover’s here comes the Moss family with an equally fascinating story.

Lillie Moss was the 2nd daughter of Walter Moss and Eliza Moss nee Wade. Lillie was born on the 22nd November 1891 in Hazel Grove, she had three sisters the eldest being Betsy and two younger sisters Martha (Matty) and Ethel.

Lillie’s father was Walter Moss he was born on the 20th August 1867 in Norbury and married Eliza Wade on the 2nd of February 1889.

I have traced the Moss family back to 1851 in doing this it revealed to me an unknown fact. It appears that Walter acquires the name Moss from his mother Sarah. Sarah Moss nee Arden was married to Samuel Moss and on the 1851 census was living with her husband Samuel, her father in law Samuel, her Mother in Law Betty, her Sister in law Ann and her Brother in law Ellis. Sarah is 19 and Samuel 31 and a Coal Miner, by 1861 Sarah is a widow and living with her Father William Arden, in Norbury, with her two children James 6 and Elizabeth 1. Now here is where the story gets interesting on the 1871 census Sarah Moss is living at 12 Button Lane Norbury and is head of the household, living with her is her son James 19 a Coal Miner, her daughter Elizabeth16, her son George 9, her son Walter 3, and her Daughter Sarah 1 and her father William. We know from the 1861 census that Sarah is already a widow, so I then came to the conclusion that George, Walter and Sarah were illegitimate. I decided to send for their birth certificates on receipt it did indeed confirm my suspicions there is no father named on any of their birth certificates. I wonder who he was and what had happened to Sarah to be in that position. This then explained the 1881 census where Walter is living in the household of his half brother James Moss with all his siblings, George and Sarah are recorded as Half Brothers and Half Sister to James. Walter is just 13 and already a Coal Miner. By 1891 Walter is already married to Eliza and they have a daughter Betsy they live next door to Eliza’s Father John Wade and family. What conclusion I have come to although only a guess on my part is that James Moss must have been a good man, as Walter recorded him on his marriage certificate as his father maybe he was like a father to him.

Now here is what I know about the Wade family which I am afraid is not a lot. I had never heard the name Wade mentioned before I started researching and as they come from Wakefield originally it has been quite hard to gather information on them. I can only trace them back to 1881 where John his wife Betsy and their four daughters Elizabeth (Eliza), Mary, Margaret and Martha are living at the Cock & Swan Yard Wakefield. John is working as a Labourer in a Worsted Mill. He then must move his family to Hazel Grove because as I have stated in 1891 he is living next door to an already married Eliza his wife has died and living with him is his son in law and all three remaining daughters he is also a Coal Miner.

Well that about all my knowledge on the ancestors, what I will say is that most of my information comes from research I have carried out on the net I try to verify all my facts with written evidence but if anyone reading this has other information or would like to add something please let me know.

My memories of Hazel Grove and the Glover family are mainly childhood ones and are vague. William Arthur my grandfather died in 1924 of Lung Cancer. I remember my father telling me he felt it had something to do with the gassed trenches of WWI and I know that other members of the family think the same, but I have searched the military records for this period and can not find any record of him (that’s my excuse for coming home and visiting Kew sorted). Lillie died in 1945 of Breast Cancer.

What I do remember is this.
I visited my father’s Auntie Betsy’s house and remember her big black range and her two broken ankles that she had never had fixed. I visited my father’s sister Mary’s house and played with her daughter Lucy the last time I saw Auntie Mary was at my mother’s funeral in 1986. I visited my father’s brother’s Norman’s house the last time I saw Uncle Norman was at my father’s funeral in 1993 and my husband Mike commented on how alike he and my father were. I visited my father’s brother Uncle Kenneth in hospital after he had a stroke and remember thinking how alike he and my father were. We visited my father’s cousin Walter on a number of occasions, I remember my father going into the garage looking atWalter's BMW motorbikes while his wife Millie fussed over us and we talked to Auntie Matty my grandmother’s sister and cousin Walter’s mother. I remember when Auntie Betsy died in 1971 we were living in South Africa and when my father read the letter he cried, he was fond of his Auntie Betsy, he was also very fond of his Grandmother Eliza he talked about her a lot I know he lived with her for awhile.

Here is a quick breakdown of the families and how they are related followed by a few photo’s I have I hope anyone reading will enjoy it and please contact me if you would like to add or change anything.
